Causes of Depression
What Are The Causes Of Depression?
Causes of Depression: Causes and Effects
The Causes of Depression take a little understanding and vary greatly from individual to individual. Consultation with a suitably qualified medical practitioner may establish the underlying Causes of Depression for the sufferer. Although there are many symptoms of depression, no one sufferer exhibits all the possible symptoms. Depression disorders may be classified as major depressive, dysthymic and manic (bipolar), which, while they have commonalities, are also typified by their differences.
It is hard to say what causes depression – it is easier to identify symptoms and associated conditions. For example, in major depressive disorders there is a general malaise of dissatisfaction with life in general; there may be severe weight loss, insomnia or oversleeping, fatigue, lack of self-respect, thoughts of self-harm and/or suicide.
In the case of dysthymia, Harvard Health Publications records that at least three-quarters of sufferers also have a chronic physical illness or another psychiatric disorder such an anxiety disorder, drug addiction, or alcoholism. Bipolar sufferers exhibit extreme ‘mood’ swings from the depths of despair to the ‘high as a kite’ buzz typified by rapid compulsive speech, a racing mind, whole-hearted commitment to achieving goals in e.g., employment, education or some other endeavour, and even hallucinations.
Readers will perhaps be familiar with other types which have their own Causes of Depression, such as post partum or post natal depression.
Is Chemistry Depressing?
Depression may be a consequence of changes in the brain’s chemistry – physical changes in the brain leading to changed emotional states. Although beyond the scope of this article, further information about these chemical changes is readily available – readers may care to search on the internet for an explanation of the role of neurotransmitters in the brain and how an imbalance in brain chemistry may be one of the Causes of Depression.
Blame it on Your Parents
Another of the Causes of Depression may be heredity. Depression runs in families – in some families every generation has its depressed person or persons. Other Causes of Depression may lie in other (serious) illnesses suffered by the sufferer of depression or in medications taken to treat those illnesses – e.g., medications prescribed to lower blood pressure may cause, or contribute to, depression. Pent-up emotions, stress connected with employment, deaths in the immediate family, financial pressures and ill health may also be counted among the possible Causes of Depression.
